2. The unexpected

Take her on a romantic trip to wine country and spend the day wine tasting (but don’t get too hammered!). End the day with a sunset hot-air balloon ride. Right as the sun is setting, tell her that this was the closest you could get her to God, so that He could be witness to the most important moment of your life. Then go down on one knee and ask her to be by your side for the rest of your lives.

3. The low-key

Take her to your favorite upscale Asian restaurant. At the end of the meal, have a waiter bring fortune cookies that you’ve had personalized beforehand. There are several online places that personalize fortune cookies very inexpensively. Have the cookie say something like, “Karen from the moment we met, you have made my life richer and taught me the depth of what love can be like.” Then have another waiter bring a second fortune cookie on a serving tray that continues the message. “I can’t imagine a life without you in it” and then the third waiter will bring a final tray with the engagement ring box on top covered by a white linen napkin so that it’s not visible. On top of the linen is the final fortune cookie that says, “Confucius say: You should say yes to the next man who asks you to marry him, ” then pull off the white linen napkin. Take the engagement ring box, go down on one knee and propose.

4. The surprise public proposal

Arrange a proposal with the management before heading to a local aquarium or zoo. Have a sign posted up in one of the tanks or one of the exhibits. Or rent the advertising spaces they show even before they start the previews at the movie you take her to. Show up at her work with dozens of roses.

5. The pampered princess

Send her on a day of pampering for her “Christmas” present. Tell her you have the whole day arranged for her to relax and concentrate on a day of beauty. Have a limo pick her up from her home, pay for a day of massages, sea salt scrubs, aromatherapy, manicures and pedicures. Then send her shopping to pick out an outfit for your dinner date this evening. There is a place in San Diego called Pretty Is where they give you a makeup and hair glam session and then a personal stylist even helps her pick out an outfit to rent very inexpensively for the weekend. Have the limo take her to a restaurant with a great view. When you pop the question, tell her that you want to spend the rest of your life making sure she is treated like the princess she is and that you want her to feel as special as she did today, all the days of her life.

6. The Scavenger Hunt

Have a limo, pedicab or carriage pick her up unexpectedly from work or school. Take her on a short ride around the neighborhood with the ultimate destination being a really beautiful locale. At every stoplight, have either one of her friends or yours waiting with two roses. When she gets to the last two roses, you will be there waiting in a tux, an armful of roses and an engagement ring. Or you can send her around getting clues until her last clue leads her to you in a tux, an armful of roses and an engagement ring.

7. For the art lover

Contact a local gallery and see if they’ll help you out. Commission a painting of the two of you together, or the two of you as a family with children. Have them hang it in an inconspicuous place in the gallery among all the other art. Take a detour through this gallery as you’re walking home from dinner and when she notices the painting. Tell her it’s your vision of complete happiness, go down on one knee, and ask her to make this vision a reality by being your wife.

8. The out-of-character proposal

Take singing lessons or dance lessons and then blow her away by a big performance with your proposal at the end. Tell her she inspires you to become a better you, that she gives you courage to try new things and that she gives you hope for a beautiful future.

9. Right out of the movies proposal

Find out what her favorite love story or scene from a movie and reenact it. Is it “An Officer and a Gentlemen?” Then show up in an officers uniform and sweep her off her feet. Is her favorite part of a movie the end of “Dirty Dancing?” Hire some professional ballroom dancers, take some lessons yourself and reenact the scene where he dances with Baby at the end of the movie.

10. Venice adventure

Take her on a romantic sunset cruise on a Gondola Venetian style. They have these in Long Beach and San Diego. The combination of ocean, views, singing gondolier, cozy blanket, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries make any type of proposal irresistible. Then have her friends and family waiting on the dock when you pull back in with balloons and champagne screaming “Congratulations!”
